My head has been spinning the past two weeks just thinking about having to head back to work as an educator. Sitting in professional development and trying to learn how to make a cute Bitmoji classroom has been stressful enough, then add in planning how to educate eight and nine year olds during a pandemic. Even during the most stressful times, there is always one space in my home that helps me feel at ease: my medicine cabinet. I know what you’re thinking... weird, right? But for me, the best form of self-care is skincare. I love my nightly and morning routines. Waking up feeling like you don’t want to get out of bed, going to sleep with the stress of the day weighing on you, it’s as if it all can be erased with the magic of skin care. I am used to having a disorganized/hide it all away and shut the door medicine cabinet. But since inhabiting this new space, my medicine cabinet has become a place of refuge. In this post I am going to walk you through some of my favorite products that help me start my day and unwind all while knowing that fine lines, wrinkles, and acne have no place on my stresser list.
Morning Skin/Self Care Products:
I am not a big believer in over-washing your skin. Personally, I have found that washing my face in both the morning and at night really dries out my skin and leads to more harm than good. With that being said, I do not wash my face when I take my pre-work shower. I tend to feel that washing at night takes away all of the dirt and grime that accumulates throughout the day, so if I wash prior to bed, do I need to strip my skin of all the natural oils that have settled over night? Warm water does the trick for me, but I don’t stop there. After showering I love to tone my skin with the GlamGlow Supertoner. This stuff is pure gold. If I had to pick one product to live with for the rest of my life, it would be this. Now, this toner is definitely a power house. It includes a “super six acid blend” that you can definitely feel. It claims to instantly clear and unclog pores, remove dead skin cells, and leave skin toned, refreshed, and invigorated. Let me tell you, it does that and more. This is my third bottle (and I have a backup ready to go in my overflow closet). If I feel a blemish coming, I hold the toner with my Marley’s Monsters reusable cotton round on the spot and it never comes to the surface. If you have sensitive skin, it may be a bit intense for you, but give it a shot (Sephora will let you return if you end up not liking it).
After toning I use one of two moisturizers, usually alternating, but it’s also dependent on my mood. The Sunday Riley Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream is my new skincare must have. Light, almost weightless moisture is definitely my go to in the morning. This leaves my skin with a light “lit from within” glow that really makes me look like I got eight hours of sleep even if I realistically got five. With two types of hyaluronic acid, this water cream penetrates water deep into the skin while papaya enzymes smooth the overall texture of the skin. I love it and it makes my skin look baby soft, need I say more? Sometimes I am looking for something a bit heavier while still providing the same moisture and brightening properties. Now this next creme is by no means heavier, but in the
winter months it feels a bit more luxurious and heavy. The OleHenriksen C-Rush Brightening Gel Creme is my go-to. To be honest, every product in their C-Rush series is incredible, but this is a holy grail product for me. This product claims to, “Deliver 24-hour hydration, brightens, firms and targets fine lines and wrinkles” (olehenriksen.com). As mentioned, it does much of the same work as the Sunday Riley Tidal Cream, but with it’s 24-hour hydration, I use it to pack some extra punch when I’m feeling a little dry. After this I pop on my Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm and am good to go (the butter balm smells like delicious vanilla icing).
The last morning routine product I can’t live without is my Each & Every Aluminum Free Deodorant. I have been using organic aluminum free deodorant for a few years now but this specific product by Each & Every has quickly become my favorite. I use the scent Cardamom & Ginger while my partner loves Cedar & Vanilla. This product is not only made up of six simple ingredients, but it reduces sweat, masks odor, and smells delicious. We began our journey with Each & Every by exploring their Discovery Set to find our perfect scent, which was difficult and I like to switch up scents from time to time, but it was a great way to test the product out without making a huge commitment. One deodorant lasts each of us about 3-4 weeks and we are such huge fans.
Nighttime Skin/Self Care Products:
Each night I start by cleansing my face with the Korres Greek Yoghurt Foaming Cream Cleanser. I am a creature of habit and have been using this product religiously for about two to three years now. I have tried samples of other products and sometimes been forced to use friends cleansers when I have forgotten to pack mine, and none leave my face feeling as clean and rejuvenated as the Korres cleanser does. It fully removes oil and impurities of the day without drying out my skin even remotely. I also love the cream to foam texture of this product and a little goes a long way! Product claims: “A nourishing cream-to-foam, soap-free cleanser that removes impurities and full-face makeup in one step leaving skin comforted and supple. (korres.com).” The clean and refreshed base this cleanser leaves my skin for other skin care products is enough of a reason to use alone.
From here, I use the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Extra Strength Daily Peel pads. First let me start off by saying these are pricey. A real investment, but one that instantly pays off. I tend to stretch these pads by using every other day, but sometimes can’t resist using them daily. During off days, I use my GlamGlow toner, or nothing at all, but when I use these peel pads, I instantly notice a difference in my skin's texture and tone. This product includes two pads, one exfoliating and smoothing treatment, wait two minutes, and then an anti-aging neutralizer treatment. The scent of this product isn’t my favorite, but the benefits outweigh the “eh” moment. Product claims: “A fast-acting, two-step daily treatment for clinical results at home. Our strongest dose of 7 acids plus antioxidants and vitamins lift away dead skin along with excess oil & impurities, while improving uneven tone & texture. (drdennisgross.com).” This product will give you the results you’d hope for from an in person skin treatment right from your medicine cabinet. I can’t live without these pads, and attribute much of my current skin care success to them. Sephora sells a five pack mini for those who like to try before you buy!
After my daily peel or tone, I like to go in with a serum. I have two in my cabinet, but have been reaching for the Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos™ Glycolic Night Serum. This product is a powerhouse in achieving soft, radiant, supple skin. Alongside the Dr. Gross peels, texture and blemishes don’t stand a chance on my skin. I am turning twenty eight next month and not to toot my own horn, but I still get carded everywhere I go, which I attribute to my skin's youthful appearance. Now, I know I am still young, but I have been investing in skincare for a few years now and you have to start early. This serum is also an investment, but the payoff is worth it.
After cleansing, peeling, and massaging serum into my skin, it is time to pack on the moisture. I am fully obsessed with the OleHenriksen Goodnight Glow™ Retin-ALT Sleeping Creme. The smell, texture, color, and way my skin feels after using is beyond words. Product Claims: “At night, your skin goes into repair mode. This rich sleeping crème makes the most of that time, exfoliating the skin’s surface to allow fresher skin to glow through. Formulated with a powerful concentration of AHAs and bakuchiol—a plant-based alternative to retinol—it fights all major signs of aging for an overnight skin transformation. It targets fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots, and firms (olehenriksen.com).” With these three products mentioned, your skin will look fresh as a baby for years to come.
The last step for bringing in moisture is eye cream. I have tried numerous eye creams as I suffer from dark under eyes and puffiness. The GlamGlow Brighteyes Illuminating Anti-Fatigue Eye Cream dramatically improves my darkness and under eye puffs. With this product, a little goes a long way. I have had the same jar of eye cream for about eight months now and am only about halfway through. This eye cream is thick and absorbs into the under eye area quickly. I like to massage the product both under the eye and on the eyelid. It feels cooling and moisturizing without feeling oily or slippery on the eyes, which other products I have tried tended to leave me feeling. Product Claims: An illuminating eye cream that instantly brightens dark circles and reduces the visible signs of fatigue around the entire eye area for a super well-rested, glowing look (glamglow.com).” The packaging is also super cute and luxurious and feels like it should cost much more than it does.
The products mentioned above are my go-to’s, but I have a pretty large repertoire of products in both my medicine cabinet and back stock. I love exploring testing out new skincare products and my routine, although pretty set, is ever changing. What products are in your medicine cabinet? What skincare items can you not live without?
